Maoists celebrate the abolition of the monarchy and the declaration of Nepal as a federal republic by lighting candles in the shape of a hammer and sickle in Kathmandu on 29 May, 2008. The Maoists started their revolution against the Shah dynasty in 1996 and fought for a decade to topple the monarchy by force. In 2006 they reached an agreement with other political parties to remove the monarchy through a combination of street protests and eventually elections.
